OVERLAND

OPENING RECEPTION, Friday, April 18th, 6 - 8 pm

In rural northeastern Washington State, my parents built a cabin with timbers salvaged from an abandoned homestead. We hauled water from a nearby creek, cooked on a wood stove and read by kerosene lantern. My earliest memories are of the forest and fields that surrounded us. Enchanted by my environment, I listened closely and learned to look for subtle patterns: the trill of birds in the trees after rain, the rippling creek-bend, the dry rasp of crickets; the autumn flutter of aspen leaves, and the wintry thump of snow falling from branches. Along woodland paths and meandering fence lines, my sisters and I discovered rock cairns hidden in tall grass and rusting car parts, half-buried. In summer we slept outside, a carapace of stars above, coyotes calling in the distance.

Overland is a collection of Benjamin Malay’s photographs and monotypes which capture the quiet of deserted landscapes, terrain lost to time and reclaimed by nature; places where horizons, vistas and vantage points merge and connect him to his childhood.
